There have been a lot of things on television today that were probably foreign again, people talking about buildings that collapsed somewhere around the time that you were born, a lot of people dying, a lot of wars since. I've spent ten years trying to figure out how to explain these things to you, trying to decide how to best make you understand what we felt when many of us still haven't figured it out.

Born this way — The myth of the gay gene
I'm a man who likes women. There's a gene for that. You're a man who likes men. There's a gene for that. She's a woman who likes women. There's a gene for that. He's a man who wishes he was a woman. There's a gene for that.
So exactly how many genes are there? Is there one that separates the tops from the bottoms? The bull dykes from the lipstick lesbians? The subs from the doms?
At some point, don't we just have to say enough with the genes?

Economic recovery — Saving is the devil
Jobs are uncertain, money is tight, and poverty lurks around every corner. It's only natural to put what few pennies you can aside in case the worst happens, right? What are you trying to do, kill us all?

The sky is warming — Who's panicking?
Can we agree yet that the earth is warming yet? Even the right-wing pundits have started to admit it. Now we just have to agree on a cause, right? How about we start with agreeing how to react.

Making history fabulous — Seriously?
It its infinite wisdom, the state of California may soon mandate the teaching of gays in history. The decision was based on the need for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students to have role models in their lives. So is that the reason straight people can't make it on Broadway? Because there are no straight role models there?

Happy 4th - Your government sucks
As we come together today to pay homage to one line in a song most of us think only plays at the beginning of baseball games, it is important, but clearly not mandatory, to reflect on how this nation began.
It was more than 200 years ago, and the founding fathers held a well-publicized debate in which both sides had already outlined a set of talking points and hammered the document before them with party doctrine and rhetoric, attempting to appeal to a voter base rather than to make any headway.
No, wait, that was last week.

Getting Started the Hard Way - God-given My Ass
As I go about my daily life, I see many faces. They belong to people of different races, of all levels of intelligence and education, widely varying religious and economic backgrounds. And yet, I only ever hear two opinions.
There are more than 311 million people living in the United States, encompassing countless ways of life among a population comprised from that of every nation on the globe. And yet, I only ever hear two opinions.
I watch television news and commentary, read it in the newspaper, seek out new thought from every outlet imaginable. And yet, I only ever hear two opinions.
